About the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

The preserve consists of 3,400 acres of beautiful wetland just outside of Fort Myers Beach. Despite its name, it actually stretches 11 miles through an awe-inspiring ecosystem. It is also home to a diverse population of plants and animals, some of which are on the endangered species list.

In 1970, the slough was officially named a preserve due to the positive influences the area had on the environment and local community. Today, it continues to provide education and low impact recreation to thousands of visitors per year. The preserve also deters flooding, recharges shallow wells, protects the health of the Gulf, and acts as a safe haven for nature.

Guided Walks at the Slough

Every day of the year, you can explore the preserve along the famous boardwalk! Along the way, you and your family will find fascinating wildlife and plenty of photo opportunities. For a fun and educational experience, we recommend taking one of the daily guided tours. Your knowledgeable guide will introduce you to the slough, lead you to points of interest, and answer any questions you might have. Whether you decide to take the guided tour or embark on your own, you’re sure to find at least a few slough residents including alligators, turtles, wading birds, and more!

Six Mile Slough Interpretive Center

The Interpretive Center, Lee County’s first green-certified building, was built through donations generously given by the community. As soon as you walk through the doors, you will find displays that provide all of the information you need to know about the slough.

Volunteers are granted use of the Blake Cadkin Memorial Resource Room. This library of information helps them learn more about the region or answer any of your questions.
